So yesterday I was doing my filing and I herd this noise, it sounded like someone connecting to dail up. Anyways I ignored it. After 5 mins after it started I walked past a co workers desk and reliezed the sound was coming from her desk. So I stop and look and see this machine with a key board and phone attached to it and a screen with text rolling across. I remember being told that she couldnt hear over the phone so I figured it was a translator thingy (whatever their called) She noticed I was looking and waved. Realizing how impolite I was being I waved shyly back and continued on my way. While I was filing I could still here it and thought about how interesting the machine was.

She is always one to share a story so after she was done she came to find me. She told me that she still hasn't gotten use to the way people sound over the phone. Then she pointed at her head by her ear and said "we live in such a noisy world I haven't gotten use to it." I looked at her confused for a moment and went. "for 62 years I was deaf and couldn't hear, but now with this thing in my head I hear everything. Some things sound so strange, I'm not use to it all yet." I told her that I never really thought about it. Then she told me about hearing all these things for the first time. And I relized how much I take for granted.

The sounds of the rain, the wind, as baby peaking gibberish at you, you own husband talking. She said she never missed it when she deaf because she didn't know that everything made noise. And I guess you never really miss what you don't know.

It's just so . . . I dunno strange.

Anyways one big thing that I learned about talking to her is she reads lips, which was something I didn't know. So now I know that when I talk to her I need to keep an even tone of voice, and look directly at her so she can read. Shes pretty cool, for an old lady lol.
